West Coast won three championship games in 1986 to finish fifth equal in the Third Division. The season was not a memorable one but the team performed quite well at times, especially against Thames Valley. Lack of experience was one of the main problems while the best players were not always available.
Although the concept of a nation-wide Third Division championship is a good one, West Coast found the travelling involved something of a financial strain. The forwards were reasonably strong, being well led by Blair Hopkins after he took over the captaincy. Hopkins had good support from experienced prop Paul Davidson and from new representatives Robin Manera and Andrew Hay.
Wayne Gugich, who holds the record for most points scored for West Coast, was missing in 1986 and his ability to kick goals was keenly missed. However, Alastair Coleman showed promise and should develop into a good fullback. He improved on his l985 form. A newcomer, Tony O`Regan, appeared to have potential as a first five-eighth and David Lynch revealed sound defensive qualities.
No West Coast players were called on above provincial level in 1986.
