West Coast repeated its 1991 results by losing every game in 1992 but this year the losses were by bigger margins. The team scored only 50 points while conceding 637 and the 128-0 loss to Canterbury was a New Zealand record for a first-class game. One wonders at the wisdom of playing these hopelessly one-sided games even if they are traditional. Time was when games between Canterbury and West Coast were close, with the Coast recording the occasional win, but those days have gone. West Coast once boasted the All Black captain and supplied two players to the New Zealand team that toured Britain in 1935.
This union has made a significant contribution to rugby over the years and it is sad to see it humiliated as it was in 1992. There is a lack of depth in the area which has suffered over the last few years from serious unemployment problems and players have been lost to other districts. However, the squad which new coach John Murray assembled at the start of the season should have fared better than it did. There was an absence of fitness which could be blamed only on the players themselves.
First five-eighth Michael Foster was the best of the Coast players. He kicked intelligently, backed up well and played some good games in spite of spending most of his time on defence. Outside him Shaun Fahey showed considerable promise. He won selection in the New Zealand Under 19 team and looks to have a bright future.
Mark Costello, who captained the team, worked hard at halfback. Bruce Maitland, who led the side in Costello’s absence, was a hard-working loose forward and Gary Frost toiled hard in the tight. Arthur Gillman improved during the season and should be good value in 1993.
