After finishing at the top of the third division following round-robin play in 1999, West Coast plunged badly in 2000 to finish at the tail end. The only successes were the retention of the Rundle Cup in the early-season game against Buller and a win over South Canterbury.
The loss of several players who had headed overseas and the return to Canterbury of the experienced Hamish and Stu Loe contributed to the sharp reversal of fortune. Once more the Coast relied heavily on club players from Christchurch, with nine being in the regular squad. Michael Foster was again the captain and he now equals Ken Beams’ record of appearances for the union. However, he received very limited opportunities to further extend his union points scoring record. Aaron Kemp was a capable halfback and former Nelson Bays representative Colin Lott was used as a utility, covering several positions.
Other backs to appear regularly were Steve Heemi, Luke Tamakaha, Regan Pearce and Jolan McLean. Experienced front rowers John Aitken and Jonson Hauraki received good support from locks Arthur Gillman, who had last appeared in 1996, and Brad Tauwhare - the only player to start every game. Flanker Regan Dixon and number eight Jamie Connors were the only loose forwards to appear regularly. Connors was selected for the New Zealand Divisional trial.
